There are a lot of holidays that we celebrate every year. There are a lot of holidays that seem to sneak up on me. Anyone else? One of them that always seems to sneak up on me is Veterans Day. Don’t get me wrong, Veterans Day is so important and I’m so glad that I have the opportunity to share it with my class. My students love learning about Veterans Day. We go through so much history and point out all the wonderful things our Veterans have done for us. One of our favorite things to do is to read books to learn, so I found some books for Veterans Day to add to our time studying Veterans Day.

Honoring Veterans on Veterans Day
H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet, written by Devin Scillian and illustrated by Victor Juhasz, is a fantastic children’s book about honor. A lot of books for Veterans Day will talk about honor, but this one, in particular, is a great option for a lot of reasons. First of all, it focuses on the military family, not just what the military does. Second of all, the author of this book has a father who was in the military, so he knows firsthand what it’s like to be a member of a military family. His insight into the world of a military family is invaluable. He spends some time talking about the different branches of the military and what’s different about them. He then talks about the importance of the letters that those in the military receive. The letters are a link home and they can be a huge morale booster in the military.
While this book is a great read for all, it will be especially meaningful to those who have a family member who is serving or has served in the military. As far as books for Veterans Day go, this one is a touching read that has a special place in our hearts. All 3 Veterans Day books for primary students are great options to read to your class.
