March is one of my favorite months of the year. Not only is it my birthday at the end of the month but we also celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, which is a fun holiday to celebrate and read St. Patrick’s Day books to your kids. In years past, I would have students make leprechaun traps, and I would also have fun messing up my classroom like the leprechaun did it. The look on the students faces when they saw the classroom was priceless. It’s worth the trouble picking up the messy classroom just to see their reaction.
Another perk of the holiday is reading fun St. Patrick’s Day books for primary students. The St. Patrick’s Day stories listed below can be read to toddlers up to elementary school aged children. Here’s my top 3 St. Patrick’s Day Books for kids.

The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever
If your students have ever wondered how Leprechauns celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, then The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever by Teddy Slater is your book. The book follows a leprechaun family celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. What activities and traditions do they enjoy and follow? How do they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a family? You will have to read and see, but it’s a great book to read to your class! Students will love learning about the different Irish traditions. Also, it’s a great book for a class comparison.
The Leprechaun’s Gold
Leprechauns are known for having a bad rap but not all of them are bad, and The Leprechaun’s Gold by Pamela Ouncan Edwards is a story just about that. First the story is about two harpists, Old Pat and Young Tom. Old Pat is kind and does the right thing. Young Tom is the complete opposite and is out to become rich. When a harping contest is announced, they both set to take the journey to become the finest harpist in all of Ireland.
When things don’t go right for Old Pat, due to Young Tom’s doing, he thought for sure his chances of winning the contest were slim. Inevitably, they both run into a leprechaun needing help. Knowing that leprechauns often play tricks on travelers, will Old Pat or Young Tom help the leprechaun? Who will win the contest? You will have to read more to find out.
This book has great lessons about kindness and greed. It’s a St. Patrick’s Day book that your students are sure going to love! Finally, as a bonus, the illustrator hides sixteen four leaf clovers hidden throughout the book. It’s up to your class to go back and find all sixteen hidden four leaf clovers.
The Luckiest Leprechaun
The Luckiest Leprechaun by Justine Korman is a story about friendship and trust. MacKenzie O’Shamrock, a leprechaun, makes shoes for fairy gold and guards his gold from greedy people. One day, a big dog named Lucky almost destroies Mackenzie’s house. To make it up to Mackenzie, he offered to be his guard dog or friend even though Mackenzie didn’t want him around. Lucky followed him wherever he went. Day after day, Lucky was there keeping Mackenzie company and slowly over time Mackenzie started to like having Lucky around. One day, Lucky and his gold dissapears, and what happens next surprises Mackenzie even more.
