Mother’s Day and Father’s Day always sneak up on me in the season of the last days of school and the beginning of Summer. These Mother’s and Father’s Day children’s books are great to pull off the shelf to remind your students of these important holidays to appreciate Mom and Dad. Because Mother’s Day is during the school year, we often create cards or something fun for Mom. However, since Father’s Day falls in June after many schools have wrapped for summer, it can be forgotten. Encourage your students to do something special for Mom and Dad both!
Just Me and My Dad & Just Me and My Mom by Mercer Mayer
The “Little Critter” books have been a favorite of families for years and the author doesn’t disappoint with these Mother’s and Father’s Day children’s books. Because both days are important, there’s one each for Dad and Mom. In the book about Dad, the father-son duo gets to explore nature while camping, hiking, and making s’mores. For Mom’s day out, the pair explore the city. They visit the museum, the toy store, and the aquarium as they spend special time together one-on-one.
Mother’s and Father’s Day Children’s Book: A Perfect Father’s Day by Eve Bunting
Dad is settled into his favorite chair for a nap and a quiet relaxing day at home when Susie comes and interrupts. She has some ideas for the perfect Father’s Day! There are lots of fun things on the agenda, many of which seem to be activities that lead to a perfect day for Susie. Dad is a good sport and goes along on the adventure his daughter thinks will be a great day for the two to celebrate together.
Mother’s and Father’s Day Children’s Book: I Love Mom with The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
This companion book to The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great Mother’s Day children’s book for moms and kids to enjoy together. Throughout this book, the Very Hungry Caterpillar gets to experience lots of different relationships between mothers and their kids. The caterpillar sees examples from penguins and owls to kangaroos. All mothers take care of their children even when they don’t realize it. This book is a great way to appreciate mom on Mother’s Day.
The Night Before Father’s Day & The Night Before Mother’s Day by Natasha Wing
These two Mother’s and Father’s Day children’s books are a great way to celebrate mom and dad. The Father’s Day book has Mom and the kids cleaning the garage. Their goal is to surprise Dad with getting some chores and cleaning done. Since everything is done in the garage, the family has time for everyone to enjoy a bike ride together. The Mother’s Day book has a similar theme with Dad and the kids showing Mom how much they appreciate her. From baking sweet treats to pampering Mom, this book gives kids great ideas to take care of Mom on her special day.
Me and My Mom & Me and My Dad by Alison Ritchie
In these books, Little Bear spends time documenting all the things that Mom and Dad do well and the ways they spend time together. Mom can create the loudest cave echoes, longest daisy chains, and best footprints for Little Bear to follow in. Dad wakes Little Bear with a tickle on the nose and knows all the best places to see new and interesting things. He takes Little Bear exploring, swimming and playing in the rain on a fun-filled day together. The best thing that Little Bear learns on the days spent with Mom and Dad in these Mother’s and Father’s Day children’s books is just how much they love their cub.
Mother’s and Father’s Day Children’s Book: Me and Mama by Cozbi Cabrera
This Caldecott winner and Coretta Scott King Honor Book is a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day and honor Mom. As they spend a rainy day indoors, this book explores the relationship between a mother and daughter. Although not always the most exciting of days, rainy days can be special, too. Getting ready for the day and going through the small tasks of brushing teeth, showering, getting dressed, and even eating breakfast may seem mundane. However, the affection between mother and daughter shines through the pages..
Mother’s and Father’s Day children’s books are a wonderful way to start your celebration this year. These two days are meant to celebrate Mom and Dad and the special relationships we have with them. Help your students experience and remember Mother’s and Father’s Day through some of these books today! Don’t forget to check out my top books for the end of the school year and summer!
