Let’s talk about the weather. No, I’m not trying to use this as a cheesy conversation piece today. Let’s actually talk about the weather! I don’t know about you and your students, but my students love talking about what the weather is doing outside. There’s no better conversation piece than the rain falling against the windows. So we love to read children’s books about weather to help them understand and know more about the weather they’re experiencing. They’re already talking about the weather, so why not educate them with some children’s books about weather, right?

Learn About Weather With Fly Guy
There’s this super cool children’s book series where a guy named Buzz and his pet fly named Fly Guy teach students all kinds of things. In the book Fly Guy Presents: Weather, written and illustrated by Tedd Arnold, Fly Guy, and his best buddy Buzz head on over to the weather station to help your students learn more about the weather! They experience a windy day as they make their way to the weather station. Once they get there, they learn so much more! They show your students different kinds of weather and how to take care of themselves in certain weather situations, like wearing sunglasses and sunscreen if you’re planning to be outside when it’s sunny. If you’re looking for children’s books about weather, this one is such a fun read!
Learning About Meteorology
A good find when I was searching for children’s books about weather is this cute book called What Will the Weather Be?, written by Lynda DeWitt and illustrated by Carolyn Croll. This book is a level two read in the Let’s Read And Find Out series, which, as it implies, teaches students through reading about different things. Unlike a lot of children’s books about weather, this book is educational while also keeping your kiddos entertained! It uses diagrams to help students understand how meteorology works and it also explains to them what the different instruments in meteorology can be used for, like thermometers and barometers. This is one of our children’s books about weather that manages to be informative while also keeping your students engaged through colorful pictures and riveting questions.
Tornadoes
Sometimes, the weather can be scary. It can be difficult to find children’s books about weather that show off the scarier side and what it’s really like. Wild Weather: Tornado, written by Catherine Chambers, is an excellent educational tool for learning about tornadoes. This book is on the longer side for children’s books about weather, but it’s full of all kinds of information. It shows students what a tornado looks like, as well as what causes them, where they’re most likely to occur in the world, as well as talking about tornado alley in the United States, and what it’s like to be around them. Your kiddos will also learn about ways to prepare and protect themselves, should they ever be near one. There are other children’s books about weather that talk about tornadoes, but this one really is one of the best!
National Geographic
National Geographic Kids Readers: Weather, written by Kristin Baird Rattini, is, as it states, a part of the National Geographic Kids Readers series. This level one book in particular is a great selection on our list of children’s books about weather. It has everything you love about National Geographic, but it’s geared toward your students! It asks and answers questions about how clouds form, what causes a tornado to take its shape, and how and why thunder and lightning come to be.
There are definitely other great children’s books about weather for you and your students, but this list of 4 weather books for primary students is definitely a great list that you do not want to miss!
