Usually after the holiday break, elementary schools celebrate the 100th day of school sometime in the month of January or February. Every classroom does the 100th day of school a little bit different. I always try to make the 100th day of school special. It is always nice to do something different and to change up the normal routine for the day. Here are 5 100th Day Activities that I’ve used in my kindergarten and first grade classroom.

100-Year-Old Person
For my first few years as a kindergarten teacher, we would celebrate by dressing up as a 100-year-old person. I had a blast borrowing some of my grandmas’ old clothes and shoes and wearing them for the day. My students would really get into dressing up too. They would come dressed up in old clothes, gray dyed hair, and even come in with a cane or walker. Overall it was a fun day for teachers, students, and a great photo opportunity for parents.
Sorting A 100 Day Snack
When I moved to first grade, we no longer dressed up as a 100-year-old person. The teacher would provide a 100 day snack. Students would sort the snack into groups of tens, fives, twos, and ones. For the snack, I would pick something small like Cheerios or Skittles. If you would like a snack mat for your classroom, click here for a free copy of the 100th day of school snack mat that I used in my classroom. Kids loved making crafts with the snacks. For example, once we finished sorting Cheerios, I would give each student a long piece of yarn and students would make a necklace out of them.
100 Small Items From Home
Third, we would also have students bring in 100 small items from home to share with the class. We would do many activities with the objects throughout the day. I would also have the students use the mat to sort their objects if it was small enough. If not, the students would group their items on their desk or floor.
Fancy Nancy The 100th Day of School
Some students become concerned about what items they should bring in for the 100th day. To answer some of their concerns, I would read the book Fancy Nancy The 100th Day of School. In the story, Nancy is struggling with what 100 items to bring in for a class project. Throughout the book, Nancy gets many different ideas from her fellow classmates, but she is still torn on what items she should bring. Nancy either doesn’t have enough items or it is not fancy enough for her. Nancy is soon inspired for her class project after her sister’s goldfish dies.
100th Day Videos
If you’re looking for a video read aloud similar to the Fancy Nancy book, I suggest the 100th Day Worries by Margery Cuyler. The premise of the book is very similar to the Fancy Nancy book. In conclusion, I’m a big fan of Jack Hartmann and his music. In fact, he’s come to our school a few times for a concert. If you need a few minutes and the students need to let go some energy, here’s a great Jack Hartmann song about counting to 100. Students can get fit and practice counting to 100.
