I just love the season of spring. Winter is always so dark and cold so it’s so nice when everything starts to warm up and bloom. There are so many books about the season of spring, and you really can’t go wrong with reading with any of them, but I wanted to share some of my favorite books to read so here are my top 5 spring kids books for primary students.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring
A new book to my classroom collection is Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring by Kenard Pak. This is my first book by this author and he also has other books on the other seasons as well, which I will have to check out too. What I love about this book is the illustrations. He does a great job using the illustrations to transition between the seasons. The story is about a boy and his dog. The boy and his dog are walking through the night of winter saying hello to the parts of winter they know so well. The next morning when the dog and little boy wake up, they discover the signs of spring around them.
When Spring Comes
When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes is a great before and after story describing winter and spring. Throughout the book, the author and illustrator show many examples of what happens to the plants, animals, and snow before spring and what happens once spring arrives. What really brings the words to life is the illustrations. The illustrator does a great job showing what something looks like during winter, almost spring, and spring for good. For someone who grew up in the south, and teaches in the south, a book like this is so important because most seasons look similar here. It really gives readers a chance to fully understand what winter and spring are really like.
The Tiny Seed
Eric Carle is another one of those authors and illustrators that you cannot go wrong with. The Tiny Seed is about a group of seeds that get blown off a flower during the season of fall. Among the group of seeds is a tiny seed smaller than the others. Throughout the book, you follow the journey of the little seed as it gets blown over different seasons and different parts of the Earth. When the snow falls on the little seed, it protects it until it is spring when the little seed starts to grow with the other seeds. Over time the little seed grows into one of the biggest flowers anyone has ever seen. When the season starts to change again, the cycle starts over with the flower starting to lose its petals and seeds.
When Will it Be Spring?
One of the first things to come to my mind about spring is bears coming out of hibernation. When Will it Be Spring by Catherine Walters, is a story just about a mother bear and her baby bear, Alfie, getting reading to hibernate for the winter. Throughout the story, Alfie continues to ask how he would know when it was spring. The mother would give a few examples like when the swallows arrive, or when the sun is bright and warm. Each and every time Alfie would wake up, it wouldn’t be spring yet, until one day he woke up and it really was spring.
Plants in the Spring, People in the Spring, Weather in the Spring, and Animals in the Spring
The next 4 books are a book series by Marth E. H. Rustad. In her spring series, she has books called, Animals in Spring, People in Spring, Weather in Spring, and Plants in Spring. What I like about this series is the real-life photographs. Students get to see an up-close and personal look at what spring looks like for people, plants, animals, and what changes in the weather we can expect during the spring. Out of the 4 books in the series, I like People in Spring the best. What students really care about is what impacts them. This book lists what we do in spring. For example, in the spring we can expect to wear raincoats, use umbrellas, go on walks, plant seeds, watch plants grow, and more.
