Ensuring I drink plenty of water has been one of my goals for the year and it hasn’t been going so great. Tip # 1: Plant Nanny or Another Water Tracker App
My life is busy, and it’s very important to drink enough water throughout the day. Unfortunately, the seemingly endless daily tasks distract me from drinking water, and it doesn’t help that I have pregnancy brain either!
Technology can be a time sucker, but technology can be super helpful when it comes to reminders. There’s plenty of water tracker apps available, so I decided to try a free app called Plant Nanny. It keeps track of your water intake on a daily basis. Also, it reminds you to take a drink if you haven’t logged any water. Once you download the app and enter your weight information, Plant Nanny will inform you on how much water you should be drinking daily. Next, you pick out a cute plant. The more water you drink, the more your plant grows. When you finish your water amount for the day your plant is fully grown.
Tip # 2: Yeti
I used to bring my Tervis Tumbler with me to school every single day. I would fill it up with ice and more water during lunch. The colder the water, the more water I would drink. I loved my Tervis Tumbler until I found out about Yeti. I purchased a Yeti 30-ounce Rambler after my friend suggested that I buy one due to how cold it stays during the day. She was right! I was so impressed that there was still ice in my Rambler when I woke up the next day or how there was still ice when I left it in my car one day. I noticed my water intake increased just by purchasing a different container.
Tip # 2:
Hydro Flask
Skip forward to today. I’m drinking more water than I had been, but it still wasn’t enough. I love my Yeti Rambler, but since having a baby two years prior I’ve found that it’s not the best to have around with an active toddler. I always love water bottles because if it’s closed, it doesn’t leak. That’s how I found the Hydro Flask with the straw lid.
The Hydro Flask keeps everything cold like a Yeti but it’s more like a water bottle, so leaking is not really a problem. The best part is the straw! I drink so much more water with my straw lid than I did with my Yeti Rambler or my Yeti water bottle. The straw lid closes shut so leaking is not a problem if it gets turned over. Second, the Hydro Flask is great for traveling. It fits perfectly in my diaper bag or backpack when going to the airport. I just fill it up once I get though security or pour my drink from the flight attendants in it.
Tip # 3: Find Your Stride
I found out that a reminder on my phone and a Hydro Flask with a straw is my jam. I drink more water when it’s cold and I have reminders. Also if I try to drink one bottle of water at lunch time, snack time, and dinner, that helps too. What if that’s not your thing? During my digging, I found some other helpful tips to increase water intake. After trying them, I found out that they didn’t help me, but it may help you hit your stride.
- Drink water with fruit: Some people are not water drinkers since it doesn’t have flavor. Try drinking water with your favorite type of fruit.
- Clear goals on water bottles: Buy a bottle with visual measurement markers on it. If you search on Amazon for water bottles with visual measurement markers, you can find a wide range of bottles with different types of goals on each bottle. Find the bottle that sparks your motivation to drink more water.
- Special Bottles: Did you know that they make bottles that light up or make sound? The bottle I purchased made sound every hour to remind me to drink more water. It was super helpful. I loved the reminder. It was loud, so I could hear it across the house too.
Bonus Water Tips for Teachers
Remembering to drink water, at home, is a challenge, but drinking water at school is another challenge. You spend the entire day super busy with very little time for yourself. Here are a few tips that I learned over the years. Try a few of the suggestions and see which ones work for you and your class.
- Alarm: Set up an alarm on your phone for certain times during the day to remind yourself to drink some water.
- Student job: Students love to be helpers in the classroom. Have a student keep track of the time and remind you every time that you should take a drink of water.
- Transition Times: Have you and your students take sips of water during transition times.
- App: Find a water tracker app that sends you reminders throughout the day. If you have a watch that syncs up to your phone, you don’t even need to have your phone out to get the reminders.
- Carry your bottle around: As I moved throughout my classroom or school, I took my bottle wherever I went or had a student grab it for me.
- Snack and Lunch: Try to drink an entire bottle of water during snack and lunch time.
